Johanne Picken talks about her Para-Dressage horse It’s Bobkat
I ride with the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) Carrick Group in Ayrshire, Scotland. I am also a grade 3 para dressage rider. My horse/teammate is Its Bobcat (Bob) who is a 10 year old, 16.3hh, former racehorse. Its Bobkat ran in 6 races under National Hunt rules but he was never placed. He also run in 9 Point to Points which were slightly more successful, winning won start and being placed 3 times.
We only started doing dressage together in March this year, and he is proving to be quite talented. We compete regularly at Muirmill Equestrian Centre, and also made the long trip south to compete at Hartpury in July this year, at the RDA National Championships. However our most successful outing this year was at the RDA Scottish Championships on the 2nd of October, where we came 1st in our class with a score of 75%.
I could not have wished for a better horse to suit my type of riding. He is incredibly safe, and does not have a bad bone in his body. He is proof, if proof be needed, that former racehorses can turn their hooves to anything, even Para dressage!
