David Thorpe appointed as chairman of Retraining of Racehorses (RoR)
Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is delighted to announce the appointment of David Thorpe as its new chairman, from 1 January 2025. David succeeds Philip Freedman, who has served in this role since January 2021.
David brings a wealth of experience from across the equine and racing sectors to RoR as it continues its mission to safeguard the wellbeing of former racehorses.
David has held various senior positions within the British horseracing industry including a director of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), the British Horseracing Board (BHB), and as a member of the Levy Board. David played a pivotal role in the restructuring of the industry, demonstrating his commitment to its future and sustainability. Additionally, he established a stud farm in the Cotswolds and pursued his equine breeding business.
David's extensive knowledge and leadership experience will be instrumental as RoR seeks to establish a sustainable funding model to deliver on the goals outlined in the RoR Strategy 2024-2026, published earlier this year.
Commenting on his election, David said: “I am honoured to take on the role of chairman at Retraining of Racehorses. I look forward to working alongside the dedicated team, board members, and the wider industry to further advance our mission and continue championing the welfare of Thoroughbreds as they retire from racing.
“On behalf of everyone at RoR, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Philip Freedman for his time in office, particularly for the introduction of the three-year strategy for RoR, which has been an essential driver in our efforts to work with the industry to develop the funding model needed for aftercare in the sector.”
Outgoing chairman Philip Freedman said, “It has been a privilege to serve as chairman of Retraining of Racehorses. I am proud of the strides we have made in promoting the welfare of Thoroughbreds and in laying the groundwork for a sustainable future. I have every confidence that David will bring invaluable insights and leadership to this important role.”
