news Eight racing teams pad up for RoR Racing to Cricket day

28th August 2019
  • Great day of sport plus fantastic charity auction
  • Hosted on the Getty Estate’s Wormsley Cricket Ground

This Sunday Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) hosts a charity cricket day at the historic and picturesque Wormsley Cricket Ground. Eight racing teams will do battle in a limited overs knock out competition to land the honours and win the RoR Racing to Cricket Trophy.

As well as a sumptuous buffet lunch, also on the menu are four outstanding auction items, including Centre Court tickets for Wimbledon and a quarter share in a yearling filly, as well as a range of generous raffle prizes.

The Wormsley Cricket Ground is part of the private estate owned by the Getty family and some of the world’s greatest cricketers have played on the ground in past charity events. This Sunday, teams representing seven racehorse trainers and RoR Chairman Paul Roy will follow in their footsteps.

Featuring both Flat and Jump trainers, competition will be fierce as teams representing Charlie Hills, Richard Hannon, Ben Pauling, Mick Channon, Nicky Henderson, Paul Roy, Ed Dunlop and Warren Greatrex go head to head, bat to ball.

During the lunch break, renowned charity auctioneer Martin Pope will offer up four fantastic lots for bidding. Kicking off with two Centre Court debenture seats for the opening day of the 2020 Wimbledon Championships. Also available will be a night at the Royal Opera House in January to see a production of the ballet Sleeping Beauty, making it the perfect Christmas gift, and the use of a private box at Ascot, catering for up to fourteen people.

Finally, a quarter share in a yearling filly closely related to multiple Group winner Dutch Connection will come under the hammer. Already equipped with a winning name, West Side Glory, the filly is out of an un-raced half sister to Dutch Connection, by his sire Dutch Art and all training expenses will be covered and paid on the purchaser’s behalf.

Di Arbuthnot, Chief Executive of RoR, said: “We are looking forward to what should be a memorable day. It is a remarkable setting and we, together with the players, are very fortunate to have the opportunity to use the Cricket Ground at Wormsley.

“On account of the generosity and support of donors who have sponsored the catering, the wine, the trophies and the flowers, not to mention the wonderful lots in the auction and prizes in the raffle, we have the chance to raise some valuable funds for the charity, while also enjoying a great day out.”
